Story & Clark Piano Co. Factory: Formerly established and manufacturing pianos from 1895, but Hampton L. Story is said to have built his first instrument in 1857 and together with Isaac in the late 1860’s formed the firm of Story and Camp. In 1884, joined with his son, Edward H. Story and Melville Clark, the company Story and Clark was formed. By 1901, the business moved to Grand Haven, Michigan where it remained until about 1985. Story and Clark pianos have been manufactured in Chicago, Illinois, America; London, England; Berlin, Germany; Seneca, Pennsylvania; Japan; Indonesia and China. It is interesting to note that in the 1970’s, Yamaha built some models of the Story and Clark grands in Japan and were said to be of a good quality. In 1993, the Samick Piano Co began building pianos for them in Indonesia and in 2002 the Dongbei piano company in China also manufactured pianos bearing the name of Story and Clark. The company has changed ownership several times, and it seems no longer manufactures pianos in America, but the name has remained the same. One can only assume that the pianos are a reflection of such widespread insight. Although one can find information about their current manufacture of acoustic pianos modernised with accessories to match digital pianos and modern technology, Eshelby Pianos has only dealt with Story and Clark acoustic pianos without the modern accessories.
